winter living series – beach getaways – Punta del Este

For the beautiful, cosmopolitan and chic of South America (and for that matter, the rest of the world) there is no place like Punta del Este, Uruguay.

And it precisely now that this magical stretch of beach socially comes to life.  Much like its counterparts St. Tropez and the Hamptons, the summers here are warm and can be as relaxing as you want them to be … but do beware, the nightlife is in my estimation, the best there is.
While there are many fashionable places to stay, I would hands-down check into the small boutique hotel Playa Vik, the brainchild of New Yorkers Carrie and Alex Vik.  This art-filled hotel is FAB – not only for its superb location by the ocean, but its sophisticated modern architecture, hospitality and service. The main hotel (named Sculpture for its angled titanium and glass structure – shown below) is surrounded by 6 casas with planted rooftops.  And the pool … to die for.  While not as breathtakingly cantilevered as the pool at the Joule Hotel in Dallas which I featured this summer, it is equally fascinating.  It’s made of black granite and at night, the lights at the bottom of the pool glimmer beneath the water like an otherworldly constellation (shown above).  It is very, very, very beautiful.

Happy Hanukkah!
