Palo Samko: the devil is in the details

Schooled in Slovakia and now Brooklyn-based, inventive designer Palo Samko is one furniture maker to keep an eye on.  While his chairs and tables are all the rage in some circles, my preference is for his walnut round mirror with a leather strap.

One could buy a single piece, but I think a combination of several, in different diameters, make for a very nice installation, don’t you?  The mirror hangs with cast-bronze hardware, a detail that gives the whole that little extra something … the difference between merely well-done and truly superb.  And they’re also playful.  I can’t help to think of Salvador Dali’s surrealist melting watch when I see Palo’s smallest mirror looking like it’s hanging from a hot piece of gum stretched to its max.  Very cool indeed!
