Finn Juhl’s divine NV53 armchairs

I was recently scouting for Finn Juhl chairs and in the process found this wonderful store on the Kings Road in London called Sigmar, the creation of Interior designer Ebba Thott and furniture specialist Nina Hertig … the perfect combo of taste and brains! The store offers well-designed pieces from the 19thto the 20th century with a predilection for Northern European midcentury vintage design.

Sigmar has a pair of 1950s  NV53 chairs designed by Juhl and made by master cabinetmaker Niels Vodder upholstered in grayish-blue and rosewood that are, simply spectacular.  First, I’m a sucker for Brazilian rosewood, now a protected species.  It’s a very “masculine” wood … dark and very rich in its tone.  Second, the sensualness of the shaped armrests is delicious. Finn Juhl could have left the chair without the rosewood armrests and it would have been a simple and comfy chair.  But by adding the wood, he converted vanilla into something sexy and timeless.
PS: I’ve included images of another NV53 chair in white/beige but in rosewood as well for you to get a better idea of the awesomeness of the chair.
