Lamps on either side of a sofa are perfectly acceptable and can be very, very cool.  But something that makes a space appear more relaxed yet sophisticated is placing table or floor directional lamps around the room.  It can be Artemide’s Tolomeo lamp, Arne Jacobsen’s Arne lamp or Serge Mouille’s Tripod lamp. Recently I used the most amazing table and floor lamps designed by Michele de Lucchi and Alberto Nasson in 1982 but restyled in 2009.
